Film v digital

Whilst I currently use both film and digital media in my general work, I still prefer to use film for weddings and civil partnerships. I personally feel that digital imagery gives a waxy feel to skin tones and simply doesn't have the same tonal depth and quality that film has. Film is also far more tolerant of recording contrast than a digital sensor. Wedding scenes are often high in contrast and on a sunny day it can be difficult for digital media to capture detail in sunlit areas on a pale dress and shadow areas on a dark suit at the same time. Digital images are by their nature 'soft' with regard to focus and 'flat' with regard to contrast, and these features need to be altered in post production which can amount to hours of work which ultimately need to be built into the charges made. Digital media also degrades over time more quickly than film negatives and requires work to maintain it. Despite perceived wisdom, quality digital is therefore not a cheaper option than film.

Prints

All prints are machine prints, printed on gloss resin coated paper and are borderless. The prints are 5" x 7.5" as this size is full frame ie. very little of the negative is cropped out in the printing stage. Printing to other sizes such as 5" x 7", 6" x 8" or 10" x 8" only represents 80% to 90% of the whole negative area and this can result in compositional elements being removed from the picture whether it's tops of towers, feet or even heads. This 5" x 7.5" size is ideal for both being placed spaciously into an album or put directly into frames. Faces can be seen clearly at this size while a smaller 6" x 4" print is too small to make much impact in my opinion. The colour prints provided are printed with an emphasis onflattering skin tones rather than clothes colours

Negatives

The film negatives remain my property and copyright unless you wish to purchase them outright. I will usually have the negatives scanned to CD at low resolution at the same time as processing the film, so I am still able to provide low res digital data for reprint ordering via a password protected web page that your family and friends can easily access.

Colour and black & white

I work with two 35mm Nikon cameras and usually use both colour and black and white film. You may chose an approximate percentage of one to the other though I find some scenes cry out to be captured in colour while others look better in black and white. I use whatever film suits the situation best.

Booking

Once you have confirmed you'd like to reserve my services I will forward a booking form/contract with attached terms and conditions for you to sign, copy and return to me. Also I will, at this point, ask for a non-refundable deposit of £250. 50% of the balance of fees will then be due four weeks prior to the wedding date with the final balance to be settled on delivery/collection of the photographs.
